MIA Celebrates American Eagle's New Regional Commuter Facility Grand Opening |
|
|
MIA opened on Thursday August 19 the new American Eagle's Regional Commuter Facility (RCF) at North Terminal D. The new terminal will offer customers improved check-in and domestic baggage claim. It will also have an array of shops and restaurants featuring the flavors for South Florida. The new lounge features two concourse-level gates with jet bridges for convenient boarding. The opening of the RCF concludes the initial phase of American Eagles' transition to new departure areas at gates D53, D55 and D60. When the next phase of construction is complete, lower-level gates will eliminate the need for most shuttle buses to take passengers to awaiting aircraft. A new skytrain is expected to open in September that will whisk thousands of customers per hour along the 1.4 mile North Terminal concourse. Continue

|
Travelers in MIA's Concourse D will soon be able to hop on the skytrain automated people mover and get to their gate or baggage claim area within minutes. Temporary Altars is a series expressing artist Teresa Camozzi’s search for the spiritual in the midst of a turbulent global environment. The “altars” are created in the tradition of Tibetan Thangka paintings, portable references for meditation. The mobiles consist of chiffon panels created by composing purified glass vessels on a spinning turntable. The irretrievable moments of changing light patterns are then captured through digital photography.

40 at a time, 35,000 MIA workers train to better help visitors |

Miami Today - At first glance, the 40 or so men and women sitting in school desks Monday at Miami International Airport customer service training seemed anything but uniform. Two younger-looking women sat up straight toward the front of the Miami-Dade Aviation Department training room, looking polished in heels; handbags at their sides. A spectacled, gray-haired man who could have been a professor leaned against the wall to the right. And toward the back, a row of gruff men in neon-orange vests striped with reflective tape sat slightly slumped but attentive. Despite coming from different fields — construction, cargo and more — all had one thing in common: as new hires at Miami International, they're now tourism-industry representatives. Continue

Memoire sans Histoire, a collection of recent works by Haitian-born Miami artist Edouard Duval-Carrié that chronicles the major events in Haiti’s past, is on display through May 15 at Miami International Airport’s Central Terminal Gallery (Concourse E, just past the security checkpoint). Aside from his interest in Haiti’s history, Duval-Carrié’s work focuses on the exploration of new materials. In contrast, for example, to the use of bronze as a characteristic material for sculpture, he enjoys working with modern substances like resin and aluminum. Miami International Airport's steady passenger traffic in 2009 despite a full-year of economic recession worldwide made it the busiest airport in Florida and the second-leading airport in the U.S. for international passengers. MIA was one of the few U.S. airports to maintain stable passenger traffic levels last year, serving 33.9 million passengers in 2009 - down only half a percentage point from 2008. MIA's steady traffic moved it ahead of Los Angeles as the second-leading airport in the U.S. for international passengers after JFK. MIA also regained its top spot as the busiest airport in Florida after trailing Orlando the last five years. MIA continues to be Florida's leading international gateway, handling 69.5 percent of the state's arrivals from abroad - more than all the other airports in Florida combined. MIA retained its domestic market, serving 17.9 million domestic passengers in 2009 - the same number as 2008. The airport also only lost one percent of its international passengers from the previous year, serving nearly 16 million passengers from abroad. For the full traffic report, go to http://www.miami-airport.com/2009_traffic_report.asp.

Recent security breaches at U.S. airports have once again turned the spotlight on MIA as a national model. Thanks to the work of the Miami-Dade Police Airport District, crime at MIA has been reduced to its lowest levels in recorded history. MIA is the only U.S. airport that requires all employees to receive training in Behavior Pattern Recognition, or BPR, which teaches employees to identify suspicious behavior. Nearly all of MIA's 35,000 employees have received BPR training since it began two years ago. For more information, read the latest issue of Airport Improvement magazine at http://www.airportimprovement.com/content/story.php?article=00142.

In an effort to speed airport users' entry and exit from MIA's parking garages, the Airport will be initiating SunPass Plus in April 2010. SunPass Plus is easy and convenient to use. Simply choose the SunPass Plus lanes to enter and exit the garages. Drive slowly and stop in the SunPass Plus entry/exit lanes until the gate arm opens. Remember, you must enter through a SunPass Plus lane to be able to use SunPass Plus as a method of payment upon exiting. At the exit, once the SunPass Plus transponder is recognized, the parking fees will be deducted from your SunPass Plus account and the gate arm will open to allow you to exit. If you use SunPass Plus and want a receipt, a receipt can be sent immediately to you if SunPass Plus has your mailing address. Access your SunPass Plus transaction by logging on to your account at SunPass.com.
